WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org: Which is the Best Blog Platform For MLM Professionals?

WordPress is a powerful tool for those of us using blogging as one of our marketing strategies.  What you may not know is that you have a choice between two versions of WordPress and the one you choose could have a big effect on your business.  The WordPress.com platform is simple to use and can have you up and blogging in less than an hour just by following the prompts. Here is a rundown on WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org.

WordPress.com the Pro Side

The pro side of the WordPress.com debate is most certainly its ease of use.  It requires no technical skills whatsoever to use any of the available free themes and widgets. It allows popular Java embeds such as YouTube so you can take advantage of the power of YouTube running on your site.

WordPress.com the Con Side

The biggest con to WordPress.com is the limitations of having to use only the pre-loaded themes and widgets.  Your choices are limited to what you see there.  Of course, they offer over a hundred themes, but when you consider the huge number of bloggers using WordPress.com, it’s easy to see that hundreds of sites will end up using the same theme.

Another huge con to WordPress.com is their inclination to delete blogs they feel are blatantly promotional in nature.  Take it from me, they can do this without any warning whatsoever!  So let me be with one who warns you — if you care planning to promote your business or product on your blog, you  will want to avoid using WordPress.com.

The Pros of WordPress.org

WordPress.org is software that gives you complete control over the look of your blog.  You can create new themes, add plug-ins, run advertisements and just about anything else you may want to do with it.  You control the code and can modify it to your heart’s content.  This freedom is the crux of the WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org battle.

If There is a Downside to WordPress.org

It’s not really a downside as much as it is common sense, If you want to be able to work with the code to create new looks and widgets for your site, you have to have the technical skills to do it or be willing to hire someone who does. A quick trip to Elance.com or rentacoder.com will turn up someone with top shelf skills and reasonable rates.

The Only Other Thing You Need for WordPress.org

To take advantage of the greater freedom you get with WordPress.org you’ll need a hosting service. If you already have a host, make sure it can offer at least 99% up time, you don’t want your blog going down just when people are trying to access it.

Some of the better services will even move your domain name and all your files for you.  They should also be able to provide unlimited bandwidth and disk space.  Hosting services used to be expensive, but as more companies have come into the market, it’s become very affordable.  Look for a company that will give you a free trial period to try out the service before you make a final decision.
